AN INTERAGENCY WORKSHOP WAS HELD IN JUNE 1973 AT THE SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY IN HUNTSVILLE, TEX., TO EXPLORE THE RELATION BETWEEN CORRECTIONS AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES.
Abstract
ABOUT 300 PERSONS FROM THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA PARTICIPATED IN THE WORKSHOP. THEY REPRESENTED SUCH ENTITIES AS THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, GOVERNMENT CORRECTIONAL AGENCIES AND FACILITIES, UNIVERSITIES, NATIONAL COUNCIL OF JEWISH WOMEN, AND CHILD SERVICES ASSOCIATION. PRESENTATIONS DEALT WITH THE MEDIA'S IMPACT ON VIOLENT BEHAVIOR, CORRECTIONS IN TRANSITION, FEMALE OFFENDERS, POSITIVE PROGRAMS FOR JUVENILE DELINQUENTS, COMPREHENSIVE DELINQUENCY PREVENTION PROGRAMS IN THE COMMUNITY, AND CANADIAN PENITENTIARIES. ATTENTION ALSO FOCUSED ON THE PRISON ENVIRONMENT OF INMATES, ROLE OF PAROLE BOARDS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE, VOLUNTEERS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, SEARCH AND SEIZURE, AND REHABILITATION IN MILITARY BARRACKS. OTHER TOPICS COVERED WERE PENAL AND JUVENILE CODES, ROLE OF THE NATIONAL COLLEGE OF JUVENILE JUSTICE, PROTECTION OF CHILDREN IN A CHANGING SOCIETY, PRISON WARDENS, THE ATTICA RIOT, AND A MOCK TRIAL.
