The National Research Council's Committee on National Statistics and Board on Children and Families held a workshop in March-April 1994 to examine the adequacy of Federal statistics on children and families.
Abstract
Workshop participants included staff of statistical agencies that design and implement surveys, researchers who analyze statistical data, and policy experts who use data to address issues affecting children and families. The workshop focused on information needs of policymakers, strengths and weaknesses of existing and proposed Federal statistical data sources to meet these information needs, and promising strategies for improving the capacity of the Federal statistical system. The importance of statistical data was discussed in relation to child development, family and community resources, children's transitions into school, Federal data on educational attainment and transitions into work, data needs for monitoring health care reform, and the extent and effect of interpersonal violence on children and families.
