This book presents European conventions pertinent to international cooperation in the areas of extradition, mutual assistance in criminal matters, transfer of proceedings, the enforcement of sanctions, and the protection of crime victims.
Abstract
Two conventions address extradition, with one focusing on the use of extradition in the suppression of terrorism. Three conventions and one agreement deal with mutual assistance in criminal matters. One convention pertains to mutual assistance in criminal matters in general, and two conventions and one agreement concern particular crimes. The issues in the latter documents are the punishment of road traffic offenses; laundering, search, seizure, and confiscation of the proceeds from crime; and illicit traffic by sea, with attention to drug smuggling. One convention addresses the transfer of proceedings in criminal matters, and four conventions focus on the enforcement of sanctions. The latter conventions provide for international cooperation in the supervision of conditionally sentenced or conditionally released offenders; the international validity of criminal judgments; the international effects of the deprivation of the right to drive a motor vehicle; and the transfer of sentenced persons. One convention on the protection of crime victims deals with compensation for victims of violent crimes. Two conventions pertain to the dissemination of information among countries on the substance of their criminal codes and the control of the acquisition and possession of firearms by individuals.
