Firearms simulators represent a unique and invaluable tool in training security and military personnel by demanding participants to perform at a high level of judgment and accuracy and by creating situations where the trainee is forced not only to react, but to make a decision.
Abstract
An adequate response to a situation which may require firing a weapon depends upon the initial decision whether or not to respond with defensive fire, the reaction rate, and accuracy of the response. Using simulators, the instructor can evaluate the trainee's response. The Australian Firearms Training Systems, Inc. (FATS) can be used with weapons ranging from shotguns, revolvers, and automatics to M16s, M60s, and antitank rocket launchers. The system offers over 450 scenarios and a multilane training capacity to accommodate large-scale training of teams and departments. Fully portable and capable of operating indoors, FATS is independent of poor weather conditions or inconvenient scheduling. The system is user-friendly, requiring little instructor training to operate the push-button system controlled from a low-profile remote console. Computerized feedback is delivered accurately and immediately to the instructor, who also has access to a range of diagnostic tools to rectify problem areas demonstrated by the trainee's performance on each scenario.
