Abstract
The discussion covers the goals and organizational structure of the probation service; the roles of probation service officers, community service officers, and other probation personnel; the relationship of probation officers with the local magistrates' court and Crown Court; and the nature of probation casework. Additional sections explain the nature and role of community service, the provision of hostels and other living accommodations, the relationship of probation officers to prisons, the supervision of offenders released from prison, work with juvenile offenders, and work with the family court. Additional chapters examine training and employment issues and explore the future of probation and the criminal justice system. Index and 25 references
