The 1999 annual report of California's Judicial Council summarizes key trends, court workloads, and judicial branch achievements.
Abstract
Major developments in 1998 focused on reforms related to State funding of trial courts, trial court unification, the jury system, access and fairness, and improving justice for children and families. The budget for fiscal year 1999-2000 was increased to fund court operations, new technology, jury reform, and measures to improve access to the courts. Data are provided on trial courts in California, including data on judgeships, court facilities, drug courts, the Y2K problem, court interpreters, court-ordered child custody mediation, and juvenile dependents. Facts about and achievements of jury system reform are noted, as well as challenges faced by and achievements of appellate courts and juvenile courts. The use of technology by California courts is discussed, and a profile of the Judicial Council is included. Tables, figures, and photographs
