PRESENTATION OF TRENDS IN PENAL MANAGEMENT TOWARD A MORE DEMOCRATIC CONCEPT OF PRISONS, AND A COMPARISON OF THESE TRENDS TO A GENERAL SOCIETAL MOVEMENT IN THIS DIRECTION.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR PRESENTS SEVERAL SCANDINAVIA STUDIES WHICH HAVE FOUND THAT PRISONS HAVE BEGUN TO REJECT THE MILITARY ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE WITH ITS CHARACTERISTICS OF DISCIPLINE AND PUNISHMENT. THE MODERN TREND IS TOWARDS AN INWARD-LOOKING ORGANIZATION IN WHICH THE PRISONER HIMSELF IS THE FOCAL POINT. THE AUTHOR FEELS THAT THIS TREND IS DESIRABLE SINCE THE MILITARY MODEL MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PRISON NEUROSIS AND THE FAILURE OF THERAPEUTIC TREATMENTS. THE MODERN, TREATMENT-AIMED APPROACH EMPHASIZES INMATE-STAFF MUTUAL ACCEPTANCE, GROUP ACTIVITIES, AND 'REAL LIFE' EXPERIENCES.
