This planning guide is intended to assist local jail and correctional administrators and their design professionals in the planning of spaces for jail industries.
Abstract
The information is intended to be used in conjunction with other existing resources and to be adapted to the particular facility's program, regional requirements, and local construction practices. An introductory section explains the purpose and mission of jail industries, outlines the major categories of jail industries, and discusses the benefits and other aspects of such programs. The next section explains operational considerations, including legal considerations, the development of the concept, the program plan, the business plan, community involvement, the use of available resources and space, the selection of the industry, equipment and operations, and quality control. The third section explains functional program planning, including the circulation diagram, security screening, control, administration, the warehouse and production space, classrooms, the tool room, toilets, and emergency areas. The final section focuses on materials, the structure, power and lighting, heating and ventilation, space standards, and capital costs.
