Abstract
THE ROLE OF THE JUDICIARY IN THE AMERICAN SYSTEM OF POLITY, FEDERAL JUDICIAL STRUCTURES, FUNCTIONS, AND DECISION-MAKING PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED. A SYSTEMATIC MODEL OF JUDICIAL POLICY MAKING IS CONSTRUCTED WHICH TAKES SERIOUSLY THE SOCIOECONOMIC AND POLITICAL MILIEUS OUT OF WHICH COURT CASES COME, THE INTERACTION OF PERSONALITIES AND ATTITUDES OF ACTORS IN JUDICIAL DECISION MAKING, AND THE SUBSEQUENT EFFECT OF A DECISION ON THE SOCIOECONOMIC AND POLITICAL STATUS QUO. THE RELATIONSHIP OF POLITICAL IDEOLOGY AND JUDICIAL ACTIVISM IS EXPLORED. THE FINAL CHAPTER OFFERS A LISTING OF WORKS AND STUDY TRENDS IN THE DIFFERENT AREAS OF JUDICIAL POLICY MAKING.
