In presenting data on juvenile justice in California for 2010, this report indicates the number of arrests, referrals to probation departments, petitions filed, and dispositions for juveniles tried in juvenile and adult courts.
Abstract
The data in the report were submitted by 56 of California's 58 counties, which represents 99 percent of the State's juvenile population. Data on arrests cover the number of juveniles arrested in 2010, the types of arrest charges, and the demographic characteristics of the juveniles arrested. More than half (57.2 percent) of the arrests involved misdemeanor offenses; another 28 percent were arrested for a felony offense, and the remaining 14.8 percent were arrested for a status offense. Of the arrested juveniles, 79.1 percent were referred to county juvenile probation departments. The report's section on referrals provides data on juveniles who were brought to the attention of the county probation department in 2010. Of the juvenile cases referred to county probation departments, 36.5 percent were closed at intake, indicating that no further action was taken. A petition was filed in juvenile court for 51.2 percent of the referrals. The report's section on petitions presents data on juveniles whose cases proceeded for formal processing by the juvenile court. Of these juveniles, 57.5 percent were made wards of the court. Of the petitions for formal juvenile court adjudication, 23.8 percent of the petitions were dismissed. The report's section on adult court dispositions for juveniles presents data on juveniles processed through the adult court system. Of these juveniles, 84.9 percent were convicted. Extensive tables and figures and 6 appendixes that include California code sections and a report on data limitations
