Abstract
Following a review of the legal and philosophical bases for a juvenile justice system separate from adult criminal justice processing, a chapter discusses the substantive law governing juvenile criminal violations, noncriminal misconduct, and dependency and neglect. A chapter on law and court decisions pertaining to the arrest and investigation of juveniles addresses search and seizure problems, police interrogation, waiver of rights, procedure for determining a confession's admissibility, and in-custody identification procedures. Separate chapters also cover law and court decisions pertaining to juvenile pretrial detention and juvenile court waiver. Other juvenile court procedures reviewed encompass the adjudication hearing and the disposition decision. An explanation of laws and court decisions pertaining to juvenile training schools focuses on the nature of training schools, their administration, and transfers. Administration issues include the substantive rights of juveniles, procedural protections, and judicial 'checks.' Remaining chapters consider juvenile parole and confidentiality in the juvenile process. Chapter footnotes, a table of cases, and subject index.
