How the 1978 national rates of suicide of juveniles in jails, lockups, and juvenile detention were calculated is discussed.
Abstract
The estimated 1978 suicide rates of juveniles incarcerated in secure detention facilities reported by the CRC researchers are lower than the recalculated estimated rates reported in this paper by very wide margins. The implications of the differences between the estimated suicide rates of juveniles in adult jails and lockups and those in juvenile detention centers are discussed. The more accurate estimation of the suicide rates of juveniles in secure detention were designed to assist students of juvenile behavior to better understand the personality and behavioral dynamics of the juveniles and the stresses of secure detention and to assist in developing better public policy and agency procedures. 2 tables and 6 references.
