This article examines efforts by the State of Kansas to improve reentry rates for mentally ill inmates.
Abstract
In recent years, Kansas' successful reentry efforts have garnered national attention for reducing parole and probation revocations, lowering the number of absconders, and decreasing the return rates of mentally ill offenders. Kansas was successful in these efforts due to community-based teams, which were established to work with these inmates. The recent economic downturn has greatly affected the continued success of these programs. This article addresses the effect of the budget crises on the reentry initiative. The areas affected include housing and employment opportunities for mentally ill offenders, community mental health centers, and cash assistance and medical care. The article also addresses recent efforts by the State to continue to provide these services. These efforts include a thorough documentation of the offender's condition and need for assistance; continued communication with those providing the services; and ensuring non-duplication of services.
