This overview of laser fingerprint development technology outlines proven procedures, describes several special procedures, and identifies current areas of research.
Abstract
After discussing physical principles underlying the laser fingerprint method, the author argues that the laser method should replace conventional approaches whenever possible. Practical limitations to the method are also addressed. An outline of mature laser procedures focuses on four areas: inherent fingerprint fluorescence, dusting with fluorescent powder, cyanoacrylate ester dye staining, and ninhydrin/zinc chloride. The following procedures, developed for special situations, are explained: benzoninhydrin treatment, enhancement of latent print development by enzymes, and vapor steaming with ultraviolet-responsive dyes. Obsolete and rarely used procedures are identified. Areas of research discussed include detecting latent fingerprints on difficult surfaces, the applications of laser technology to other criminalistic fields, and portable fingerprint lasers.
