Abstract
"Mission Critical Communications" profiles some leading communications-technology companies that offer police agencies what is needed for the development of an effective long-range plan for interoperability. "The Making of a Real-Time Operations Center" describes the Calgary Police Service's Real-Time Operations Center, which provides support to first-responders in real time 24/7. "Law-Enforcement iPhone Apps" profiles the best iPhone Apps for making a police officer's job easier. "Fairfax, VA. And Verizon Wireless" explains how Verizon's 4G LTE modem solution assisted the Fairfax, Va. Police Department to upgrade their 9-1-1 system. "Personnel Early Warning Systems for Small Law Enforcement Agencies" explains how such a system helps correct personnel problems before they become major issues. "Generational Conflict in the Workplace" argues that an understanding of generational issues and differences can create more effective communication in the workplace. "Old Advice for New Sergeants" presents advice for first-line supervisors in patrol from police supervision courses, road sergeants, and criminal justice professors. The "On the Job" Department presents "The Answer: 10-hour Shifts." which argues that empirical research has shown that the most cost-effective shift scheduling is four 10-hour-day work weeks, which have proven to be best for police officers and the departmental mission. The "Eye on Education" Department profiles the Southern Police Institute, which has pioneered thorough and innovative police education and training since 1951. The "Just Handed Down" Department's "Risk Management Meets Psychology" develops the concept that unconscious reactions can cause behavioral changes. Other Departments present articles that pertain to "Mission Critical Communications" (upgrading 9-1-1 call processing) and "Product Spotlight" (Viking VP600 portable radio).
