A SUMMARY OF THE RESULTS OF AN EVALUATION OF AN ALLPURPOSE COMMUNICATIONS/PROTECTIVE HELMET, IN WHICH BALLISTIC, CHEMICAL AND INCENDIARY, BLUNT TRAUMA, AND FIELD EVALUATION TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON THE HELMET.
Abstract
THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE HELMETS WOULD NOT DEFEAT 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN PELLETS, CALIBER .22 LONG RIFLE BULLETS, OR CALIBER .38 HANDGUN BULLETS, FIRED AT 20 METER RANGE. AT AN IMPACT VELOCITY EQUIVALENT OF 100 YARD RANGE, THE .22 CALIBER BULLET WAS DEFEATED BY THE POLYCARBONATE VISORS, ALTHOUGH IT PERFORATED THE HELMETS. THE HELMETS WERE ALSO SUBJECTED TO HYDROCHLORIC AND SULFURIC ACIDS FOR A PERIOD OF 30 SECONDS; NO OBVIOUS DAMAGE RESULTED. THE DAMAGE DONE TO THE HELMETS BY FLAMING GASOLINE WAS FOUND TO BE ENTIRELY DEPENDENT UPON THE DURATION OF EXPOSURE; AFTER 30 MINUTES THE DAMAGE WAS READILY OBSERVABLE. USING A POLICEMAN'S CLUB, FIVE IMPACTS WERE DELIVERED TO HELMETS MOUNTED ON GELATIN-FILLED SIMULATED SKULLS. NONE OF THE IMPACTS PRODUCED FRACTURE TO THE SKULL OR VISIBLE DAMAGE TO THE HELMETS, NOT DID X-RAYS DISCLOSE ANY INTERNAL DAMAGE TO EITHER. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER TESTING AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE HELMETS ARE SUMMARIZED.
