THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH (NIOSH), AT THE REQUEST OF THE ORLANDO (FL) POLICE DEPARTMENT, MADE AN ON-SITE VISIT TO THE DEPARTMENT'S FIRING RANGE, TESTED FOR LEAD LEVELS.
Abstract
LEAD LEVELS IN THE AIR, AND IN THE MEN'S URINE AND BLOOD, WERE FOUND TO BE UNSATISFACTORY, ALTHOUGH THEY DID NOT REACH THE DANGEROUSLY UNSAFE LEVELS. FINDING THE VENTILATION SYSTEM INADEQUATE, THE NIOSH TEAM RECOMMENDED CHANGES WHICH WERE SUBSEQUENTLY IMPLEMENTED. A FOLLOW-UP VISIT FOUND THAT LEAD LEVELS HAD DROPPED TO A MUCH MORE ACCEPTABLE LEVEL.
