Using a self-instructional format, this course is designed to make correctional personnel more aware of legal issues in probation and parole and in correctional facilities.
Abstract
The first part of the course provides probation and parole officers with a basic introduction to legal issues and potential liabilities involved in the performance of their daily responsibilities. The major emphasis throughout the course is on how probation and parole officers can perform their duties in a professional manner and avoid legal liability. The course is comprised of four chapters: legal overview, offender rights, probation and parole conditions, and modification of probation and parole conditions. The second part of the course focuses on the following staff concerns in correctional facilities: searches of inmates, employees, and visitors; use of force; medical and mental health care; and inmate supervision by employees of the opposite sex. Course chapters contain textual materials, case studies, questions, and an answer key, and glossaries are included. References and photographs
