This article presents test results from a select group of manufacturers on less-lethal weapon advancement in kinetic impact projectiles for law enforcement, specifically the 12 gauge and 37 mm impact munitions.
Abstract
America’s law enforcement technology continues to look towards the modernization of less-lethal munitions, thereby improving the ability of law enforcement to effectively control suspects from a distance at a reasonable cost. This article briefly discusses an area of tremendous growth in less-lethal munitions; the technology of firearm launched kinetic impact weapons such as beanbags and rubber balls. Specifically discussed was the testing or evaluation of the newly released 12 gauge and 37 mm impact munitions from four major manufacturers: Combined Tactical Systems (Model 3580 37mm Super-Sock round), Federal Cartridge (12 gauge Skirt Stabilized Sock and Triple Layer Bag), MK Ballistics (MK III 37mm flexible baton round P/N 2440), and Ordnance Technology Associates (Rubber Fin Stabilized projectile, Bean Bag, and PeaceKeeper). The testing replicated the actual conditions that would exist for an officer in the field and was a two-fold test for both accuracy and dangerousness. Comparative results were not provided, however individual manufacturers provided test results specific to their models.
