This paper describes the Pennsylvania Electronic Juvenile Justice Databook, which stores and disseminates county-by-county, year-by-year, youth-related data presented in user-friendly report templates and organized into nine broad information categories.
Abstract
The Databook had its beginnings in 1998. The nine information categories are population, health, economic, education, child abuse and neglect, reported crime, arrests, juvenile court cases, and custody. Data that relate to county and State crime and delinquency trends encompass county-by-county reporting and clearance statistics on the Index crimes of the Uniform Crime Reporting system; arrests; juvenile court cases; and custody. Access to this quantity and scope of local youth-related information gives planners and administrators a unique source of data upon which to draw in the development of policies and programs. The Databook is still new, and relatively little used. In the first 6 months after going online in January of 2001, the site has received 1,000 hits and almost no feedback. Various activities designed to publicize the Databook are expected to increase its use. In the meantime, the Databook development group is already planning expansions and improvements. 2 figures
