This paper presents guidelines for policemen regarding protection from aggressive dogs.
Abstract
It discusses characteristics that identify the threat potential of a dog and advises a slow approach while checking for warning signs of attack. A course of action to follow with an aggressive dog begins with the least aggressive approach of delivering loud verbal commands, avoiding the dog, and then calling animal control. If the dog attacks, hitting the dog with an object is suggested as a way to disable the animal. Shooting the dog is recommended only as a last resort after all possibilities concerning the safety of all persons in the immediate area have been examined.
