EXPLANATION OF THE BASIC CONCEPTS AND METHODS OF STATISTICAL SAMPLING AND THEIR APPLICATION TO STUDIES OF INMATE POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS.
Abstract
INFORMATION INCLUDED IN THIS MANUAL IS DESIGNED TO AID CORRECTIONS PLANNERS IN DETERMINING THE SIZE OF SAMPLES NEEDED TO MEET STUDY OBJECTIVES AND IN CHOOSING SAMPLES ACCORDING TO SYSTEMATIC SELECTION PROCEDURES. ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE TYPE OF INMATE DATA AVAILABLE IN INSTITUTIONAL RECORDS AND HOW BASIC NUMERICAL DESCRIPTORS CAN BE DETERMINED FROM THEM. DISCUSSED ARE ESTIMATES MADE FROM SAMPLES AND THEIR RELIABILITY, COLLECTION OF SAMPLE DATA, AND CLUSTER SAMPLING. MANY OF THE CONCEPTS ARE PRESENTED WITH MATHEMATICAL COMPUTATIONS, BUT THE PURPOSES AND RESULTS ALSO ARE EXPLAINED FULLY IN NARRATIVE FORM. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
