Abstract
A total of 44,620 referrals were made to the juvenile court, representing a decrease of 2,225 compared to the previous year. Most referrals were received from police officers. Males referred outnumbered females by approximately 4 to 1. 'Assault' as an offense category was involved in a greater number of cases than any other offense category. Placements in group homes or shelter care facilities declined 10.8 percent from 1980. A total of 105 youths were admitted to the three group homes, and 37 boys were sent to the Maryland Youth Residence Center. In addition, 8,951 individuals were served by Youth Services Bureaus (community-based agencies). A total of 1,512 youths were committed to the training schools or youth centers, representing an increase of 4.1 percent from the previous year. Tables, charts, and maps are provided.
