THE TEXTS OF THREE REPORTS PRESENTED TO THE SECOND CRIMINOLOGICAL COLOQUIUM OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE, IN WHICH THE AUTHORS ADDRESS PROBLEMS WITH CRIME STATISTICS AND METHODS OF IMPROVING DATA ON CRIMINALITY.
Abstract
IN THE FIRST ARTICLE, THE AUTHOR EXAMINES SEVERAL PROBLEMS RAISED IN ATTEMPTING TO OBTAIN CRIME STATISTICS AND MEASURE THE EXTENT OF CRIME. THE USES OF CRIME STATISTICS FOR RESEARCH AND EDUCATION, GOVERNMENT AND POLICYMAKERS, AND THE PRESS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. IN THE SECOND ARTICLE, THE AUTHOR EXAMINES THE USES OF CRIME STATISTICS AND DISCUSSES SEVERAL IMPROVEMENTS ON CRIME STATISTICS. THE AUTHOR CONTENDS THAT STATISTICS SHOULD ONLY BE COLLECTED IF THEY ARE TO BE USED AND THAT STATISTICS SHOULD BE USED AS A BASIS FOR DECISIONMAKING. IN THE FINAL REPORT, THE AUTHOR EXAMINES VICTIMIZATION RESEARCH AND MEANS OTHER THAN CRIME STATISTICS TO PROVIDE DATA ON CRIMINALITY....DMC
