This book provides information on HIV infection that is intended to help care providers in the management of patients with such an infection.
Abstract
The authors first list and describe the seven stages of the natural history of HIV infection, followed by an explanation of the laboratory tests recommended for the initial evaluation and follow-up of patients. The book then presents the recommendations of the U.S. Public Health Service and the Infectious Diseases Society of America for the prevention of opportunistic infections in persons infected with the HIV. This is followed by recommendations for antiretroviral therapy and a chapter on the management of opportunistic infections in patents with HIV infection and miscellaneous conditions by organ system. Next, profiles are provided for drugs that might be used in the treatment of HIV. A systems review focuses on treatment of psychiatric disorders, pulmonary complications, nervous system complications, gastro-intestinal complications, dermatological complications, wasting syndrome, CMV Retinitis, and fever.
