Funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Programs, the Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS) Program focuses on law enforcement efforts to combat drug trafficking and organized crime; six regional projects provide criminal information exchange and other related operational support services to local, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies.
Abstract
RISS project data are routinely collected and analyzed, and data for the 1990-1992 period indicate that RISS projects facilitate law enforcement investigations across the country by providing information otherwise unavailable or time-consuming to obtain. Each RISS project has an oversight group comprised of representatives from local and State member agencies in the project's multistate region. This group provides policy and direction regarding project operations and administration. Required components of each project include information sharing, analytical services, and telecommunications, while optional components include investigative support, specialized equipment, technical assistance, and training. A geographic profile of the six RISS projects is presented. Project membership, services, and services are described, and service activity growth trends are noted. Figures and photographs
