THE MERIT PLAN CALLS FOR THE SELECTION OF JUDGES FROM A LIST PROPOSED BY A JUDICIAL NOMINATING COMMITTEE AND FOR TENURE TO BE DECIDED ON IN A NON-COMPETITIVE ELECTION AFTER A PROBATIONARY PERIOD AND THEN EVERY TEN YEARS.
Abstract
THIS PLAN IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE MISSOURI PLAN (MISSOURI WAS THE FIRST STATE TO ADOPT IT), THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION PLAN, THE AMERICAN JUDICATURE SOCIETY PLAN, AND THE KALES PLAN. THE ROLE OF EACH FORE-MENTIONED PERSON, ORGANIZATION AND STATE IS DISCUSSED WITH REGARD TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS PLAN. JUDICIAL QUALIFICATIONS COMMITTEES ARE ALSO DISCUSSED.
