Abstract
The Ministry of Justice focused on maintaining service delivery, reviewing functions, and planning for the future during FY 2004-2005. The Ministry of Justice also continues to focus on family violence, youth offending, and crime reduction as major strategy areas. Part 1 of this report focuses on the justice sector and the adopted justice sector outcomes, which list reductions in violence, organized crime, and theft from cars as primary desired outcomes. Performance highlights from the year are presented followed by a more detailed analysis of progress towards outcomes. Part 2 recounts on performance measured against goals enumerated in the 2004/05 Statement of Intent; financial statements for the fiscal year are included in the analysis. Part 3 overviews the Ministry of Justice’s structural organization, the structure of each court, and statistics on court caseloads and collections for FY 2004-2005. Overall, the Chief Executive and Security for Justice highlights successful collaborations between justice sector agencies and community groups and declares New Zealand’s criminal justice system as robust and responsive to changing societal needs and attitudes.
