This document presents crime characteristics and law enforcement actions taken to address the State of Missouri’s crime problems in 2000.
Abstract
Crime Index offenses that were reported in Missouri in 2000 numbered 236,365. It was estimated 255,908 Crime Index offenses actually occurred on a statewide basis. This was a 1.2 percent increase from 1999. In 2000, one Index Crime was committed every 2.1 minutes. In 20.5 of every 100 Crime Index offenses, the cases were cleared by arrest or exceptional means. Violent offenses made up 10.7 percent of the total 2000 Crime Index. There were 25,438 Violent Index offenses reported. It was estimated 27,402 Violent Index offenses actually occurred on a statewide basis. This was an increase of 0.1 percent compared to 1999. A violent offense was committed every 19.2 minutes. In 45.8 of every 100 Violent Index offenses, the cases were cleared by arrest or exceptional means. In 2000, there were 332 murders, 1,202 forcible rapes, 7,436 robberies, and 16,468 aggravated assaults reported. Property offenses made up 89 percent of the total Crime Index in 2000. There were 210,927 Property Index offenses reported. It was estimated 228,506 Property Index offenses actually occurred on a statewide basis. This was an increase of 1.4 percent compared to 1999. It was estimated property offenses accounted for $330,248,630 in property stolen or destroyed. One such offense occurred every 2.3 minutes in the State. In 17.4 of every 100 Property Index offenses, the cases were cleared by arrest or exceptional means. In 2000, there were 37,371 burglaries, 147,718 thefts, 23,696 motor vehicle thefts, and 2,142 arsons reported. 62 tables, 17 figures, glossary
