This report presents statistics on the numbers, severity, and characteristics of traffic crashes involving emergency service vehicles in Missouri during 2000.
Abstract
The data came mainly from traffic crash data from the Statewide Traffic Accident Records System (STARS) coordinated by the Traffic Division of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Results revealed that 1,908 Missouri traffic crashes involved 1,940 emergency service vehicles in Missouri in 2000. These traffic crashes involved 7 fatalities and 652 injured persons. Three hundred ninety-five emergency vehicles were on an emergency run at the time of the crash; thus, the traffic crash probably delayed or prevented the unit from responding to the original emergency situation. Police vehicles accounted for 1,564 of the 1,940 emergency service vehicles involved in the traffic crashes. Two hundred of the vehicles were fire vehicles; 168 were ambulances. Tables and figures
