THIS MANUAL FOR DECENTRALIZED INSERVICE POLICE TRAINING COORDINATORS DISCUSSES RESPONSIBILITIES, ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES, AND HOW TO CONDUCT TRAINING SESSIONS.
Abstract
DECENTRALIZED INSERVICE TRAINING FOR POLICE TAKES PLACE WITHIN EACH POLICE STATIONS AND IS DESIGNED TO CORRECT PROBLEMS WITH TRADITIONAL, CENTRALIZED INSERVICE TRAINING BY PROVIDING FOR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS, ELIMINATING SCHEDULING PROBLEMS, AND ALLOWING SELF-PACED INSTRUCTION. RESPONSIBILITIES OF A TRAINING COORDINATOR INCLUDE CONVEYING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARD DECENTRALIZED TRAINING, DESIGNATING SPECIFIC TIMES FOR TRAINING IN CONFORMANCE WITH WORK SCHEDULES, ADMINISTERING TRAINING PROGRAMS, DETERMINING INDIVIDUAL NEEDS, AND TRAINING OTHER TRAINERS TO WORK DURING A STATION'S SHIFTS. IN A TRAINING SESSION, THE COORDINATOR OR OTHER TRAINER SHOULD ANNOUNCE THE PROGRAM, ADMINISTER PRE- AND POST-TESTS, DELIVER THE CONTENT (A GROUP LESSON, FILM, OR SELF-INSTRUCTION MATERIALS), AND CONDUCT QUESTION-ANSWER SESIONS. COORDINATORS AND TRAINERS ARE ADVISED TO PREVIEW ALL TRAINING MATERIALS TO BE WELL-PREPARED ENCOURAGE QUESTIONS, PROTECT TEST MATERIALS, AND EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE OFFICERS' KNOWING TRAINING MATERIAL IN ORDER TO BE PROMOTED. OFFICERS SHOULD BE GIVEN ABOUT 2 WEEKS TO STUDY SELF-PACED MATERIAL BEFORE THE POST-TEST IS GIVEN. APPENDIXES, A GLOSSARY, AND TABLES ARE INCLUDED. (PAP)
