This article discusses the equipment requirements of motorcycle police officers and the experiences encountered by these police personnel in carrying out their duties.
          Abstract
The experience of the California Highway Patrol is used to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of various motorcycles used in police work. Although most departments throughout the United States relied on the Harley Davidson in the 1960's, the 1970's brought a move towards Japanese-manufactured motor bikes. A particular favorite was the Honda 750. Hazards of working as a motorcycle officer include spending many hours in commuter traffic surrounded by tired, aggressive, frustrated automobile drivers; being especially susceptible to personal injury encountered in motorcycle accidents; and being subjected to road problems caused by inclement weather.
