This article described and discussed cases requiring a multi-disciplinary team approach to threat assessment in the identification and prevention of violence.
Abstract
Threat assessment is a developing field of knowledge, expertise, and techniques for evaluating and managing threats of violence. The key to threat investigation and management is stated in this article as the identification and understanding of the threatener’s attack related behaviors that precede and are related to his/her violent actions. This article discussed the utilization of a multi-disciplinary team approach and illustrated various case vignettes using this approach. The approach consists of a core team of threat evaluators, with a list of available experts who are called as needed. The core team provides the knowledge necessary to guide investigative efforts, accurately evaluate threats, help identify unknown suspects, and formulate operational interventions necessary to manage the risks of targeted violence. The multi-disciplinary team approach is seen as the most reasonable approach in providing accurate threat assessment of violent situations. References
