THE NAPA POLICE DEPARTMENT PROGRAM USES COLOR VIDEOTAPES TO RECORD THE PHYSICAL APPEARANCE AND SOBRIETY TEST PERFORMANCE OF DRIVERS ARRESTED FOR DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED, AND THE TAPES ARE USED AS TRIAL EVIDENCE.
Abstract
THE EQUIPMENT USED INCLUDES A COLOR CAMERA ENSEMBLE, COLOR VIDEOCASSETTE PLAYERS AND RECORDERS, AND A COLOR VIDEOTAPE PROJECTION SYSTEM. SUSPECTS ARE SHOWN THE VIDEOTAPE PRIOR TO PLEA AS A RESULT, A LARGE NUMBER CHOOSE TO PLEAD GUILTY. IF A JURY TRIAL IS REQUESTED, THE VIDEOTAPE IS USED AS EVIDENCE. ADVANTAGES OF THE SYSTEM INCLUDES EASE IN TRAINING, CLEAR IMAGES, AND THE SYSTEM'S PORTABILITY. IT IS NOTED THAT THIS VIDEOCASSETTE EQUIPMENT ALSO HAS MANY APPLICATIONS IN POLICE TRAINING.
