The purpose of this curriculum is to familiarize law enforcement and other victim services personnel with the nature of bias crimes, appropriate actions to deter and respond to such crimes, and effective ways of assisting victims.
Abstract
Training sessions focus on the definition of bias crimes, roles of law enforcement and victim assistance professionals, bias crime indicators, victim trauma, the impact of the civil rights movement on law enforcement and victim assistance professionals, legal issues and legislation relevant to bias crimes, bias crime offenders, and cultural diversity. Training sessions also cover professional development for law enforcement (investigation, report writing, and documentation) and victim assistance professionals (counseling and advocacy). Innovative practices and community strategies to prevent bias crimes are described, and available resources to facilitate bias crime prevention are listed. 71 references
