This article describes the objectives and activities of the American Prosecutors Research Institute's (APRI) National Child Protection Training Center (NCPTC).
Abstract
The APRI entered into a historic relationship with Winona State University (Minnesota) to create the NCPTC. Its purpose is threefold. First, The Winona State University (WSU) faculty will collaborate with leading child protection professionals in developing a model curriculum to prepare future child protection workers, law enforcement officers, and other child-serving professionals for the complex challenges of their work. APRI will then assist in marketing this model curriculum to other interested universities. Second, APRI will develop a program to provide ongoing training, technical assistance, and publications to child protection attorneys and workers who are already in the field. Third, the new program created in Minnesota will provide additional resources to Finding Words/Half a Nation, the forensic interview training programs of APRI, and CornerHouse, a child sexual abuse evaluation and training center that has worked with APRI for over 5 years to present quality training for forensic interviewers. The center will focus on the civil side of child protection, dealing with issues such as dependency and neglect petitions and termination of parental rights. Toward this end, it will sponsor national conferences, State and local conferences, publications, and technical assistance. APRI hopes to provide a forensic interviewing newsletter, a peer-reviewed forensic interviewing journal, and other resources that will help expand the knowledge and skills of forensic interviewers.
