Since its inception over 115 years ago, the National Parks Service has grown to include over 330 units.
Abstract
As part of this growth, the role of the Ranger has shifted from solely being a steward of natural resources to include a number of activities, many which are associated with law enforcement. This paper looks at attitudes and perceptions held about law enforcement among Rangers assigned to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The results suggest that a high degree of professionalism exists among Rangers who are willing to accept a law enforcement role, and, in many cases see law enforcement as one more means of protecting our Nation's parks.
