This article describes different ways communities around the country observe National Police Week and National Peace Officers' Memorial Day.
Abstract
The law enforcement community recognizes May 15 as National Peace Officers' Memorial Day, and the week in which it falls as National Police Week. The key to a successful Police Week celebration lies in reemphasizing an agency's desire to work with the public to foster a safer community. A departmental open house, an exhibit in a local mall or a parade can spotlight police activities and encourage community involvement. Peace Officers' Memorial Day is a solemn occasion on which to honor fallen comrades at wreath-laying ceremonies, religious services and memorial dedications. In a Washington, DC, ceremony, the names of 298 law enforcers killed in the line of duty were formally added to the national memorial wall. Minnesota dedicated a Peace Officers' Memorial after a procession from the steps of the State capitol to the memorial site. The article describes similar observances in cities and towns in North Carolina, Illinois, and New York, and includes a sample proclamation and typical schedule of events.
