Based on figures from the U.S. Department of Labor, this article reviews police salaries in departments across the country.
Abstract
On a national level, police salaries vary widely, depending on location, size of the local population, department size, budget, economic and political factors, rank, and assignment. In some big-city departments, rookies start with higher salaries than those earned by captains and chiefs in small- and medium-sized agencies in other cities. However, small-town police chiefs often enjoy jobs with less stress and more security than their big-city counterparts. This article reviews large-city police department wages, chiefs' salaries, and other wage-related factors including longevity pay, college incentives, overtime, differentials, hazardous duty pay, fringe benefits, pensions, promotions. and cost of living increases.
