Abstract
National Youth Service Day is the only day during National Volunteer Week which specifically recognizes the positive contributions youth make in their communities. The booklet presents information in seven chapters: (1) Questions and Answers about National Youth Service Day (NYSD); (2) First Steps in Planning NYSD; (3) Organizing Community Service Projects for NYSD; (4) Young People as Planners; (5) Recruitment; (6) Fundraising; and (7) Public Relations. Best practices for NYSD include starting early and paying attention to planning and strategy; building broad-based community support; organizing with the intention of increasing the community's capacity to support young people; ensuring the event and organizing process represents the community's diversity; fostering the spirit and energy of young people in the community; and allowing the planning to be a learning process for young and old alike.
