A DESCRIPTION OF THE OPERATIONS AND ADVANTAGES OF THE LAS VEGAS METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT AND CLARK COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT MOBILE COMPUTER-RUN DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM.
Abstract
SEVENTY-FIVE OF THE DEPARTMENTS' PATROL FLEET ARE EQUIPPED WITH THIS COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM. THE HEART OF THE DIGITAL DATA TRANSMISSION SYSTEM IS A 'BLACK BOX' MOUNTED IN THE FRONT COCKPIT OF THE PATROL CAR BETWEEN THE DRIVER AND HIS PARTNER. FROM THIS DEVICE, OFFICERS HAVE VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS WITH COMPUTER DIGITAL DATA INFORMATION FED TO THEM INSTANTLY FROM A CENTRAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMAND SOURCE. PRINCIPLE REASONS FOR IMPLEMENTING SUCH A SYSTEM IN THE LAS VEGAS AREA ARE OUTLINED. ADVANTAGES OF THIS SYSTEM ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. THESE INCLUDE INCREASED SPEED AND ACCURACY OF TRANSMISSION, INCREASED INFORMATION ACCESS OF OFFICERS, GREATER PRIVACY OF POLICE COMMUNICATIONS, DECREASED CONGESTION OF RADIO FREQUENCIES, ABILITY TO MONITOR POLICE ACTIVITIES, AND REDUCED POLICE RESPONSE TIME DUE TO THE ABILITY TO NOTIFY UNITS IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY OF THE CALL FOR SERVICE.
