THE ACTIVITIES OF THE MIAMI POLICE DEPARTMENT'S SPECIAL INVESTIGATION SECTION AND ORGANIZED CRIME FIGHTING TEAM IN DEALING WITH FLORIDA'S SYNDICATED CRIME PROBLEM.
Abstract
IN OCTOBER, 1969, THE SPECIAL INVESTIGATION SECTION WAS FORMED TO COORDINATE THE OPERATIONS OF THE MIAMI POLICE DEPARTMENT'S STRATEGIC INFORMATION UNIT AND NARCOTICS AND VICE UNIT AGAINST ORGANIZED CRIME. THIS ORGANIZATION ENCOUNTERED DIFFICULTIES DUE TO THE INEXPERIENCE OF THE PERSONNEL WITH ORGANIZED CRIME ACTIVITIES AND A SHORTAGE OF FUNDS. IN 1970, THE LEAA APPROVED A GRANT TO THE CITY OF MIAMI TO HIRE A TEAM OF ORGANIZED CRIME SPECIALISTS AND NECESSARY EQUIPMENT. THIS ORGANIZED CRIME FIGHTING TEAM PROJECT HAS RESULTED IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR PATROLMEN AND THE COMMUNITY, COUNTERMEASURES OPERATIONS AGAINST LOWER ECHELON ORGANIZED CRIME ASSOCIATES, AND INCREASED COOPERATION WITH FEDERAL AGENCIES.
