This report from the New South Wales Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research presents criminal court statistics for the territory for 2009.
Abstract
Major findings from the report include: in local courts in 2009, there were 133,743 persons charged with an offense, compared to 131,927 in 2008; the most frequently charged offense in 2009 was for exceeding the prescribed content of alcohol limit, followed by common assault and driver license offenses; and 72 percent of persons charged with an offense were proven guilty of the offense. This report presents data on criminal cases finalized in 2009 by the New South Wales Local, Children's, District, and Supreme Courts. Data for the local courts were obtained from the General Local Courts computer system, while data for the children's and supreme courts were obtained from the JusticeLink system. Data presented for the local, children's, and higher courts include persons charged and charges, charges finalized, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons charged, bail status and legal representation of persons charged; persons found guilty, persons found guilty of drug offenses, and average penalty for persons found guilty. Tables, notes, and appendixes
