ACTIVE SYSTEMS WHICH ILLUMINATE THE SCENE WITH A SOURCE OF INFRA-RED RADIATION AND PASSIVE SYSTEMS IN WHICH LOW LEVEL AMBIENT LIGHT IS UTILIZED TO THE BEST ADVANTAGE BY ELECTRONIC DEVICES (IMAGE INTENSIFIERS) OR BY CONVENTIONAL OPTICAL DEVICES (NIGHT GLASSES) ARE EXPLAINED.
