This article discusses Miami’s disaster preparedness and prevention initiatives
In conjunction with the Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (OEMHS), the Miami Police Department has developed a systematic approach to disaster preparedness education that is designed to serve the needs of a populace that is both very large and very diverse. The educational programs focus on public readiness in the event of natural disasters or a terrorist strike. The program provides an opportunity for the OEMHS personnel to interact with each distinct community before an emergency situation arises to educate them on how to survive a potential disaster. Along with innovative educational programs, several Miami law enforcement initiatives have been designed to preempt a wide variety of disasters, prepare for the events that might occur, and to protect the infrastructure. The initiatives are designed to do everything possible to foresee and preempt a wide variety of disasters, and to prepare for the events that might occur, including an aviation detail, marine units, state-of-the-art technology and equipment, news monitoring, and proactive closed circuit TV (CCTV) surveillance.
