This survey of security police career ladders in the United States Air Force, conducted from July to December 1983, is based on job inventory responses of 6,390 personnel worldwide representing all major commands.
Abstract
Respondents completed an identification and biographical information section on the inventory form and then checked each task performed in their current job. They rated each task on a 9-point scale to show the relative time spent on it. Five clusters and 14 independent job types were identified in the career ladder structure analysis. Of these, 4 clusters and 13 job types involved the performance of various technical security and law enforcement duties. The remaining cluster was oriented toward managerial, supervisory, and staff work; the remaining job type was committed to training functions. Descriptions for the security ladder were found to be complete and accurate, but some adjustments to the law enforcement ladder are needed. The current classification structure is clearly supported by survey data. The training system is generally functioning well, but job satisfaction of personnel was extremely low. Section summaries for job types and tables.
