THIS STUDY, CONDUCTED AS A THESIS FOR A MASTERS DEGREE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII, EXAMINES THE POSSIBLE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SPECIFIC CRIMES AND THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THEY OCCUR.
Abstract
CRIMES TYPICALLY REPORTED BY CITIZENS WERE FACTOR ANALYZED OVER 60 MONTHS AND OVER 41 AND 80 AREAS COVERING THE CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU. INDICES OF THE ECONOMY WERE FACTOR ANALYZED OVER 60 MONTHS; VARIABLES DERIVED FROM THE 1970 CENSUS WERE FACTOR ANALYZED OVER 41 AREAS. FACTOR SCORES FOR SELECTED FACTORS WERE CORRELATED AND INFERENCES DRAWN AS TO THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE CRIMES AND THE ENVIRONMENT. AGE, SEX, AND RACIAL OR ETHNIC GROUP OF PERSONS ARRESTED FOR SELECTED CRIMES ARE PRESENTED. METHODOLOGICAL PROBLEMS WITH TIME ANALYSIS AND AREA ANALYSIS ARE DISCUSSED. SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVING THESE METHODS ARE MADE. THE POSSIBLE UTILITY OF THESE METHODS FOR COMMUNITY PSYCHOLOGY IS DISCUSSED WITH EXAMPLES. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
