This report describes the organizational structure and activities of the Maryland Office of the Public Defender during Fiscal Year 1998.
Abstract
There are 12 District Public Defenders supervising local offices in each of the 12 geographical districts of the District Court of Maryland. They report directly to the Public Defender and are responsible for representing all indigent defendants in the Circuit and District Courts within their geographical boundaries. There are also two administrative and five operational divisions located at the agency's central offices in Baltimore. The report presents data on: (1) General Administration, which includes Attorney Quality and Involvement, Training Division and Management Information Systems Division; (2) District Operations, including Child in Need of Assistance Division; (3) Appellate Division and Collateral Review Division; (4) Involuntary Institutionalization Services; and (5) Capital Defense.
