This article discusses the usefulness of online courses for law enforcement personnel who wish to further their education.
Abstract
The author acknowledges that law enforcement personnel are often very busy with unpredictable schedules and long hours at work. As such, those who wish to further their education may look for alternatives to the traditional classroom setting. An Internet-based education is often the answer. There are three main types of online educational opportunities: university sponsored graduate certificate programs, a combination of traditional classroom instruction paired with online work, and company sponsored certifications. The author contends that university sponsored graduate certificate programs are one of the best ways a busy professional can further their education. The University of New Haven’s online graduate certificate program is highlighted as an efficient, comprehensive, and detailed-oriented education. Students of online courses must be highly motivated and organized in order to gain the most from the program. The author states that contrary to expectations, online courses often motivate students to participate more in discussions, since discussions take place online and not in a classroom setting. There are many universities that offer an online degree so potential students should research their options and choose an online program with a good reputation. The author offers tips for structuring an Internet education, including setting aside time for readings and assignments and building in deadlines for readings. In conclusion, the author states that an online education offers busy professionals the ability to further their education without the stress of having to be in class on time.
