Data on the use of police powers under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 revealed that the police in England and Wales stopped and searched 1,050,700 persons, vehicles, or both during 1997-98; this total represented a 20-percent increase over the previous year.
Abstract
The resulting arrests increased 19 percent, up from 91,100 in 1996-97 to 108,700 in 1997-98. Ten percent of searches led to an arrest during 1997-98, marginally lower than in 1996-97. One hundred thirty-nine road checks were conducted in 1997-98, down 14 percent from the 162 checks undertaken in 1996. The number of persons detained for more than 24 hours and subsequently released without charge was 674 during 1997-98, compared with 550 during 1996. Two hundred twenty-four intimate searches were carried out during 1997-98, 70 percent more than in 1996. Most were for drugs; Class A drugs were found during 17 searches. Tables, figures, and notes
